Pulong-Pulutan: Evacuation Management
Last September 15, 2012, KADAUPAN,
organized its bi-annual Pulong-Pulutan,
a seminar featuring the current and not-so-current justice, peace and care of
creation issues in the country. For this semester, KADAUPAN decided to focus on
Evacuation Management. This is in
response to the recent floods brought about by the monsoon rains when the Sto. Domingo Church became a temporary
evacuation area for the people around the vicinity.
The KADAUPAN invited speakers from the Philippine Red Cross – Quezon City Chapter
to discuss the said topic: Mr. Lloyd Sapia, Mr. Joel Fuentes and Mr. Dino Cruz.
The speakers discussed first, in brief, the history of the Red Cross and its
works in the Philippines and in other countries. They also shared their personal
experiences as regards their work as members of the Red Cross.
Before zeroing in to the subject of Evacuation
Management, Br. Michael Sales, OP, the Coordinator of KADAUPAN, narrated the
evacuation that happened last August 7-9, 2012. The said activity was
spearheaded by Sto. Domingo Convent and the KADAUPAN together with volunteers
from different institutions. Br. Sales also discussed the strengths and
weaknesses of the said evacuation. After hearing the evaluation, the speakers
discussed the “scientific” and proper evacuation management. They emphasized
that evacuation management is just the initial stage of a disaster management
program. They also gave some comments and suggestions as regards the recent evacuation.
They ended the seminar by inviting the audience to join Red Cross’ free
training programs for different disaster preparedness.
The Pulong-Pulutan
was attended by about thirty five (35) participants, composed of the Dominican
fathers and brothers, KADAUPAN Lay volunteers, scholars and a number of Sto.
Domingo Parish volunteers.
